Ownership P1(a)

Ownership

The ownership itself is an ultimate and exclusive right conferred by a lawful claim or title, and subject to certain restrictions to enjoy, occupy, possess, rent, sell, use, give away, or even destroy an item of property.

I have included a mind map that shows an overall picture in terms of ownership in TV industry.

Private ownership means that the company is run by itself not by members of the public or other companies’

Multinational national ownership means that the company has either investments or operations in two or more countries

Media Ownership is a process whereby progressively fewer individuals or organisations control increasing shares of the mass media. Contemporary research demonstrates increasing levels of consolidation, with many media industries already highly concentrated and dominated by a very small number of firms.

Dreamworks is an American film production company which produces and develops films, television programming, and video games. It has produced a number of very successful movies such as Shrek 2. It is currently owned by DW II Managment & Reliance Entertainment which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.

The company Paramount Pictures is owned by Viacom which is an American global mass media company which has a parent company National Amusements, Inc. that is an American privately owned theater company based in Dedham, Massachusetts, United States.

Products P1(c)

Products

Product of a company is something that was produced by it.

Paramount Pictures is mostly involved in producing and distributing movies. It has distributed famous film series, such as The Godfather. This film series consists of three parts directed by Francis Ford Coppola based upon the novel of the same name by Italian American author Mario Puzo. It follows the history Corleone Mafia family. The movie has become highly popular and the first film of the trilogy is considered by some people as a greatest film of all times.
This picture of Godfather himself is recognised by almost everyone even they haven't see the movie.

Other movie series are: The Bad News Bears, Star Trek, Friday the 13th, Beverly Hills Cop, "Crocodile" Dundee, Jack Ryan, Mission: Impossible, Jackass, Transformers, Paranormal Activity, G.I. Joe.

Paramount Pictures are also involved in distributing animation films. An example of it is Shrek. I will talk about this movie in more detail later.

Market Position P1(d)

Market Position

Market position of a company is a current place that it takes in the market in terms of market share, revenues and profits.

In 2011 the company ended Warner Bros' three-year winning streak, taking a record $5.17 billion (£3.32 billion) worldwide.
Below is a table where it is shown how the Box Office market share has been changing since 1995 until nowadays.

Also, here is the table that compares the quantity of tickets sold and the market share of the company.

Paramount Pictures is currently ranked as one of the "Big Six" film studios of Hollywood. Which is very prestigious achievement. According to Wikipedia such studio is a production and distribution company that releases a substantial number of films annually and consistently commands a significant share of box office revenue in a given market.

Competitors P1(e)

Competitors

Competition according to economics is a rivalry in which every seller tries to get what other sellers are seeking at the same time: sales, profit, and market share by offering the best practicable combination of price, quality, and service.

In general products of Paramount pictures compete on a broad level with all forms of entertainment and other leisure activities. The main competition however comes from wide-release “event” films especially animated movies distributed by other media companies. The company also faces competition from animation studios for the services of talented writers, directors, producers, animators and other employees.

Its main competitors are media companies that target same target audience and have
comparable animated filmmaking capabilities such as Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. and The Walt Disney Studios.

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. is an American producer of film, television, and music entertainment. It is generally involved in the same media area as Paramount Pictures. This fact makes this company Paramount Picture competitor. The revenue of this company was around 10 times higher than that of Paramount Pictures in 2013. In 2013, the WB Studio enjoyed record-breaking success across all businesses, including the most successful theatrical year in company history. This indicates the fact that Paramount pictures has less market share. This is due to the fact that WB is involved in making much more media products and these are more popular despite Paramount Pictures was founded 11 years earlier. The popularity of WB was made by such movies as Harry Potter that is extremely popular within children and teenagers.

The Walt Disney Studios.

This is an American media company which is a department of The Walt Disney Company. It is involved in producing movies and animated movies. It was founded in 1923, later than Paramount Pictures. It is considered as the most powerful competitor of Paramount Pictures as it now has the biggest market share at that area.

Analysis of a Media Product P2(a-g)

DreamWorks Animation

Which is a media company that creates media products that are than distributed by Paramount Pictures. They have released a total of twenty-eight feature films, including the franchises of Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, Monsters vs. Aliens, and How to Train Your Dragon.

Product (Shrek 2)

This computer-animated movie is produced by DreamWorks Animation and based on William Steig's picture book with the same name. Its purpose is to entertain young boys and girls of age 7 to 16.

Here are technical characteristics of the movie.

The film tells the story of ogre Shrek that faces problems when he gets married with his love Fiona who used to be princess, but now apparently she is a ogre too.
Here is a short overview of the story of Shrek 2: Shrek has rescued Princess Fiona, got married, and now is time to meet the parents. Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey set off to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona's mother and father. But not everyone is happy. Shrek and the King find it hard to get along, and there's tension in the marriage. It's not just the family who are unhappy. Prince Charming returns from a failed attempt at rescuing Fiona, and works alongside his mother, the Fairy Godmother, to try and find a way to get Shrek away from Fiona. Genre
Shrek 2 which is a 3D computer-animated fantasy comedy film was the second in the franchise. Its budget was $150 million and such stars as Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas were involved in creating this movie. For its genre which is comedy Shrek has all the main characteristics. It has funny characters which is the main feature for a comedy genre. Also, best story writers put a great effort in creating a story which would be funny and interesting.

Audience
The movie tells a story about an ogre that travels to meet parents of his wife but meets enemies on his way that want to separate him from his wife. This story can be particularly interesting for
boys and girls of the age between 7 and 16, because there is a lot of funny jokes and moments in it. Also, the audience may be widely attracted by interesting and hilarious characters.

The meaning was created though "Realistic, believable human characters; rich, organic natural environments; mixtures of fluids (especially interacting with characters); clothing with detailed textures and movement; and realistic hair, fur and fire". All these things were quite important for the animation team.

Production Process
The movie is produced with a help of 3D technologies such as computer animation which is the process used for generating animated images by using computer graphics.

In Shrek 2 a lot of camera angles are used as well as in every animated movie. Such camera angle as medium close up is used to show emotions of a character really precisely. Here is an example of such a shot where deep emotions of one of the heroes Cat are shown:

Here is a long shot used to show where Shrek and his friends are heading:

Here is a video where the work of an animation team is represented.

When talking about form of the movie, it is important to mention that a lot of tools were used to create the film. Such as lightning, that is bright through all the movie, and only in the moments that had to be scary or sad, the lightning was dim.

The style of the movie is cheerful and happy. The picture is bright, colourful and full of fascinating action through all the movie.
All these things make Shrek Forever and After a great animated film with beautiful animation, characters and story.

Demographics of the Target Audience P3(a-d)

Reception theory is referred to how certain individuals accept information that is given to them by some kind of media product. The way in which they interpret the information (often given in text) is affected by social status, gender, age and other factors.  The theory states that any text has to be encoded by the producers and then is decoded by the audience in a certain way. So there may be a large difference in how certain individuals interpret a give text. So authors of the text have to make their text understandable for the particular audience they are targeting.

The Hypodermic Needle Model

This model describes how the audience reflects on the mass media that it sees. The model suggests that people do not analyse the information the receive from sources such as Internet or TV and print. Audience just take it how it is and do not try to know if it is true or not. So this means that it is easy to manipulate by such individuals and control them as they are being passive while receive information.

Hegemonic Model

The theory that suggests that the population may be ruled by people with power such as church who really do not have any real power. So it means that the elite of society actually dominates the public sphere. Ideas such as capitalism or fascism may be promoted by this elite groups.

Demographics is the statistical data of a population, especially those showing average age, income, education, etc.

For the chosen product which is Shrek Franchise I will discuss the target audience and describe its gender, age, lifestyle and spending power. The knowledge of this aspects allows media companies to advertise their products in the right way and aim the advertising campaigns at the right audience. This directly refers to four Ps of the marketing mix: Product, Price, Place, Promotion. And if all of the Ps are set right than the media product will be sold and bring profit. That is what media companies want.

In Paramount Pictures Interactive Marketing Department is responsible for developing marketing strategies and implementing them in a right way. This department is dealing with all kinds of theatrical releases including official sites, creative and advertising content, online publicity, and social media. Also, this department analyses industry and technology trends to help the Paramount Pictures corporation to develop innovative ideas and campaigns.

Creative Advertising department creates the material that will be presented to advertise oncoming media products. This includes posters, movie trailers and TV spots.

Where National Advertising Department focuses on the marketing of all Paramount films, with a stress on advertising for foreign countries. They come up with unique campaigns for every film, and develop creative ways to promote the films throughout all the world.

So, returning to the product I chose.

The gender of the target audience. The franchise targets both genders as there both love story that attracts girls and tense battles that will attract boys audience. As we all know girls like love stories and the theme of relationship. In Shrek all the three parts of the series follow the story of relationships of Shrek and Fiona (who are the main characters as well). The main feature that attracts young girls is that the story finishes with happy ending and Shrek with Fiona stay together. This leaves a good impression with girls and gives them a good mood when they come out of the cinema. This is vital because on the general impression depends whether they will watch it again or not.

Where to attract young boys audience it is important to have scenes of battle or fights. in all the episodes of Shrek there is always a couple of very intense fights. Especially this is associated with Cat - one of the main characters. He always takes part in fights to protect other characters and this may be an example for the boys to behave in the same way. Also, in each movie there are a lot of chasing scenes that are really exciting, so young boys will be never bored through the entire movie.

Age of the target audience can not really be determined because the movie is targeted at children 7 to 12, teenagers 12 to 18 and sometimes adults 18 to 30. The movie seems to be for children more than for other age groups but adults and teenagers may find it interesting to watch too. I suppose was the idea of the marketing team of Paramount Pictures. Any child goes to the cinema with an adult and for adults not to feel lost and boring creators of the movie put some "adult" jokes to make it attractive for elder audience. This is very clever in my opinion as this involves two age groups at the same time and you can say that it doubles the target audience.

The average income of the Shrek audience is really hard to analyse. The movie is aimed at all the income groups and only those who can not afford the cinema ticket or a DVD are not included in the target audience. All other income groups from middle earners to high income groups are targeted by the advertising.

The lifestyle of the target audience is easy to determine. These are the people who like to spend time in the cinema or watching a great movie at home with their children. Usually these are the people who enjoy their life and have a considerable amount of free time to be able to do it.
